The Slim SATA format is a ratified JEDEC/SATA-IO standard offering a 2.5” SATA replacement alternative for space constrained embedded applications. With its small footprint and industry- standard SATA connector, the Slim SATA format is an ideal fit for embedded solid state storage applications (e.g. HDD replacement, boot module for virtualization applications, HDD caching, etc.) because it allows for high capacities and high performance in one of the smallest formats available in the market.
Leveraging STEC’s proprietary, high performance MACH8 SSD controller, the Slim SATA design offers high-performance and high capacities resulting in a no-compromise solid state storage solution providing embedded system designers with a true plug-n-play storage device, allowing for short design cycles and fast time to market.
Flash memory has quickly become the product of choice for applications requiring high reliability and high tolerance to shock, vibration, humidity, altitude, and temperature, especially important to mobile applications. Because the Slim SATA design uses NAND flash technology (e.g. no moving parts), it is more reliable and has much lower latency compared to a traditional hard disk drive, while consuming half the power (typically under 2 watts compared to 2.5+ watts for a typical mobile hard disk drive). STEC’s Slim SATA also adheres to the JEDEC mechanical specification MO-297 and as well as industry compliance and regulatory standards including SATA-IO, UL, FCC, RoHS, and ATA-7. This combined with a proprietary state-of-the-art flash memory controller supporting key flash management features including advanced wear-leveling and error checking and correction as well as drive monitoring (SMART), provides OEMs with the flexibility to address customer- specific applications with the industry’s highest reliability and endurance.
Embedded system designers require small format, cost-effective SSD solutions that do not compromise performance or reliability.
The STEC Slim SATA solution offers just that.
With a state-of-the-art SSD grade controller, it offers all of the performance, reliability, and data integrity of many enterprise-class SSDs but in a much smaller format to make it easy to integrate into space-constrained system designs.
The Slim SATA’s industry-standard design and extensive firmware support also provides high compatibility making for simplified system integration.

Multi-channel flash memory controllers provide high data throughput in both sequential and random read/write applications. Built-in flash management features and optimized support for small-sector data transfers ensure sustained data throughput and high IOPs support in even the most transaction heavy applications.
State-of-the-art flash memory controllers provide high data reliability and endurance. Built-in ECC engines and sophisticated wear leveling algorithms ensure the greatest data integrity and longest possible life out of NAND flash technology. Based on high quality components and designs tested to highest QA standards, STEC solid state storage solutions provide an unparalleled MTBF and low DPPM.
STEC’s Slim SATA complies to the JEDEC MO-297A and SATA-IO specifications ensuring compatibility and investment protection. STEC products also comply to common regulatory standards including RoHS, UL, FCC, CE, and VCCI.
Slim SATA is a new embedded SSD standard that was ratified by JEDEC (SFF-8156, MO-297A) and the SATA-IO in mid 2009. Designed to replace rotating hard disk drives in embedded applications, the Slim SATA design measures just 39mm (L) x 54mm (W) x 4.5mm (H) or 9,477 mm3 and uses a standard 22-pin SATA connector, similar to a standard hard drive. Unlike a standard drive however, the Slim SATA is much smaller and has no outer case making it a cost-effective solid state storage solution for embedded applications.
